Over the past 50 years I have experimented with egg tempera, stain glass,
oil, watercolor, acrylic, and more recently with silk.
Silk is a unique medium, in combination with dyes and inks it can produce jewel like properties. The colors flow in a fluid fashion not unlike watercolors but gutta and other resists can be used to control the movement.
This collection of images is inspired by a recent trip to the Sierra Madres
in Mexico. After a four hour drive west from Mexico we transferred to pickup trucks to start an ascent of the mountain, as the road gave way to a steeper path it was necessary to proceed by horseback. Finally as the path became more steep and sketchy we dismounted and climbed by foot.
Finally at eleven thousand five hundred feet we reached a magical
place Every year 100 million monarchs …all those east of the Rockies migrate to a few acres of forest high in the mountains of Mexico. How they find their way is a mysterious and complicated story that is now only partly understood.
This collection of images begins with photographs as the phenomenon is so remarkable it is hard to believe the magic through portrayal in paintings.( Much better photos of the monarchs than mine can be found on the website of professional photographer Court Whelan : courtwhelan.gmail.com@artstorefrontsteam.com. )
The paintings on silk only begin to capture the brilliant visual spectacle.
Please enjoy the rest of the other paintings topics on my website .... and drop me a line.
